About The Grant
Truist supports nonprofit organizations that serve critical needs in their communities. Truist Foundation has an open application process so that we can invest in innovative nonprofits that align with our key areas of focus: building career pathways to economic mobility and strengthening small businesses.
We support needs that are sustainable and don’t commit funds to recurring expenditures. Examples include funding for a new program launch, a curriculum to expand or strengthen a program, equipment to deliver a program, and capital needs.
Focus Area:
Building career pathways to economic mobility
We’re investing in organizations, programs, and initiatives that help systemically disadvantaged workers navigate the employment journey. Our emphasis is on organizations that are closest to the most impacted communities.
Our Goal:
Enable and equip frontline workers and unemployed adults, specifically women and Black, Indigenous, and people of color, with the tools and resources they need to move into middle-skill jobs that provide economic mobility and more pathways for people to thrive.
Helping workers navigate employment resources
Building capacity of reskilling and upskilling programs
Strengthening access to high-quality employment and worker protections
Improving coordination and sharing knowledge within the workforce system
Advocating for employer practice change
Strengthening small business
We’re opening more doors for racially and ethnically diverse and women-owned small businesses and entrepreneurs by investing in the network of solutions and organizations that support them.
Our Goal:
Strengthen the supports that allow minority and women-owned small businesses to become more financially sustainable and resilient by eliminating structural barriers to growth, and improving knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation within the small business ecosystem.
Increasing access to capital
Increasing access to technical assistance support and educational programs for entrepreneurs
Building small business networks and mentorship programs to enable more knowledge-sharing
Researching and developing new products, technologies, and service innovations for small business
Increasing equity and inclusion in private and public practices and policies that impact small businesses
We award grants to fiscally sound organizations that serve critical needs in the community. Usually, grants will be made only to organizations with records of successful operation, without a deficit for at least a year.
Capital campaign requests may be considered if the purpose of the campaign aligns with the Foundation's priorities and when the campaign is 60% complete in donations and pledges toward its fundraising goal, showing the campaign’s viability and community support.
We don't have a set amount or average grant size. The minimum grant is $5,000. Grant amounts are based on the strength of the program and how many people it impacts as well as how it aligns with our pillars and mission. We like to build our giving amounts as we build a relationship with the grantee.
We have three annual grant cycles. Requests should be received by:
March 31 – notified of outcome in July
July 31 – notified of outcome in November
November 30 – notified of outcome in April
Requirements
Grants may be approved for organizations classified as 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2) public charities under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This includes churches (for secular, charitable programs only), educational organizations, hospitals, and publicly supported organizations.
We do accept applications from fiscal agents and fiscal sponsors for programs that meet the Building Career Pathways to Economic Mobility or Strengthening Small Businesses pillar.
