About The Grant

The Homes for Horses Coalition, an initiative of the Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) and American Wild Horse Conservation, is dedicated to promoting equine welfare and providing opportunities for equine rescues to succeed.

AWI is providing this grant with the goal of ensuring that equine rescues have the resources they need to respond swiftly during crises, thereby ensuring the safety and well-being of horses, donkeys, and mules in their care.

Application Requirements

  • This grant is intended to support equine rescues and sanctuaries through unforeseen challenges such as extreme weather events and natural disasters, unexpected medical emergencies, and critical operational changes that affect the short-term ability of the rescue to care for equines.

  • Funds shall not be granted for the purchase or adoption of equines.

  • AWI policy does not allow funds to be used for indirect costs (e.g., no overhead costs).

  • This grant funding is reserved for 501(c)(3) equine rescues or sanctuaries that are members of the Homes for Horses Coalition.

  • Organizations must have obtained their tax-exempt status more than two years before the date of the grant application submission.

Additional Information

  • Grant sizes will range from $1,000 to $4,000, and funding will be available on a rolling basis.

  • Grantees will be expected to complete a grant agreement provided by AWI and a report on how the funds were spent at the conclusion of the grant period.

  • The Homes for Horses Coalition has sole discretion to disperse the available funds.
